More and more REDs arrive at the forum and I wonder if we could have a separate thread for blank RED face-ups by different artists. It is great to see what others create on the blank canvas of Marina's dolls!(disclaimer: I have a vested interest in these face-ups because I hope to own a blank RED one day and I'm loooking for inspiration

OK, let's start:

Oh migmig bless your heart. i really wanted to start one of these up but didn't have time as I'm driving around the dunes of the sahara ;)

I also wanted to say, I have always been really curious about the techniques and tips for painting on a resin doll. If I was to try it with an ED, I would be so nervous as I have no previous experience. Maybe those who have painted resin dolls can share some tips? It all seems like a very secretive "trade", but any help would surely be appreciated by those attempting it for the first time with their precious R.E.D

Yup, she is gorgeous - she has a very kind face, which is interesting, reminds me of the heroines in a lot of Japanese stories, someone who is serene and sweet and above all kind to everyone she meets.

her lips in particular, and those amazing lashes are fantastic. Are those the lashes that came with the doll, or did you purchase separately?? I love them!!

I haven't seen a ton of these blank RED faceups, but it seems to me that no matter who does them, there is no hiding the Enchanted Doll underneath. I think these faceups are breathtaking, and it's fun to see a little different style on an ED. But I think it is lovely to know that you can experiment with her look without changing that distinct ED look that is so appealing. And I am a fan of both the painted and the glass eyes. These girls look amazing!

Hello Elcatka,

I just LOVE what you have done with your blank Asian resin. Would you consider giving us a basic tutorial? Materials used, sealants, etc. Sealing before, sealing afterward? Which area for pastels, acrylics and pencils, etc. I am sure EVERYONE would love it! All your dolls are just lovely:)

Just beautiful! I want to order 2 dolls, as I know that's the limit, I'd like both an European looking doll and the Asian type doll. But I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure, if I could only afford one which would it be? And I thought it would be the European one but now seeing these gorgeous Asian beauties it's getting harder to be sure! I just better make sure I can afford both, that's the best solution to the problem!
Why is she called Red?

Elcatka, your face-ups and blushing are perfection--thank-you soooooo much for sharing. Also, you make it look really easy and effortless.

Leticia, I don't know if this is how Elcatka does her face-ups and blushing, but I did find these tutorials on youtube about resin face-ups and blushing using mainly pastels.

Tutorial 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuzTS7TQiQM&feature=channel_video_title)

I don't know who this person is but that she is from Moscow and I think she did the faceup. I looked at her Flickr and if she is the one doing the faceup she is one of the best painters I have seen. She does it exactly how I love and could never do. Does anyone know her? I love this ED so much. Now I would like to get a blank and get her to paint it and then I could have triplets. I am sure loving my two that I have painted by Marina who also did an amazing job.

Could we ask for two things please:

1. one thread for Nude RED's and one thread for Custom RED's
2. Could everyone put the doll number that their RED either on the picture or above or below the picture so we have an idea of how the RED's look when they come from Marina.

I'm here dribbling over these beautiful girls, so delicate and beautiful.

This latest girl by elcatca is gorgeous. I love her and that was a very quick faceup. I also am wondering if those eyes are not the glass she came with, they do look kind of painted looking. Her outfit is very pretty as well. I am glad she wasn't damaged in the whole postal thing.

Well you certainly did a great job on those eyes elcatka. I wouldn't even know where to start doing that. It gives your doll a more Marina porcelain doll look. I might just try making some of those eyes some day. You must do a lot of painting to do such a great job. Also your painting on her face around the eyes was very nice. I really liked how you did it. So are you saying your eyes were made with epoxy putty clay by Tamiya. I guess we could use any clay, it is the painting that is the hard part. I imagine you put some kind of gloss on her eyes as well as they look shiny. Great job!

Elcatca did you paint these? Are they the painted eyes? Are they made in little balls like glass eyes and can be removed or are they in there permanent. Maybe we should all try making us some painted eyes. We have nothing to lose if they are removable. I really like the painted look. It is a whole different look we all seem to want. I wonder if Marina will some day make some painted eyes for us to buy. She must be tired of us saying how we like the painted eyes.

What are we supposed to be looking at. I went to your Flickr and didn't see an ED. There were other dolls.

I wish I could find the instructions I got for posting pictures so I could send it to you. A friend from another forum sent me screen shots plus instructions and that did it for me, so easy. I know Flickr has changed but I can still do but it seems harder but it is possible. You are just doing one little thing wrong probably. Maybe someone could do the screen shot thing for you and email it to you. I do know I can't do it from my iPad. I have to use my computer.

annina
May 8th, 2014, 02:08 AM
Kelly I edited your post to make the photo show.

It's a little confusing when flickr keep changing the way to disply photos, here are the directions once more:

- on the photo page of the photo you want to share, click the box with the arrow coming out of it
- choose BBCode
- choose the size, one of the mediums is usually a good one
- copy the code and then paste that whole code right into a post here (without clicking any image buttons or anything, flickr already adds the proper code when you choose BBCode)

also, wow, she looks so amazing, I absolutely love how you painted her <3

Shashy

I really like the painted eyes. I wish I knew how and was brave enough to change the eyes. I would be scared of scratching the face. The eyes are so small. Belle Nolia has made some nice painted eyes as well. They look great in her doll. The painted eyes make the eyes so noticeable and they just pop where as the glass are kind of dead looking. There isn't enough of the white showing in the eye. When I have the light from outside showing on the face the eyes look OK but when it is kind of dark in the room the eyes look just black. The painted ones just stand out more. My Asian has brown eyes and the European has green but neither are a bright colour. Maybe a light blue would have looked better. Popovy now has the glass eyes and although I still like the painted eyes better, their glass eyes seem to show better. They are a light colour and more of the white from the eye shows.

I noticed from the beginning, that REDs eyes appear much smaller. Since I saw in person either EDs and REDs, I can say that I definitely prefer painted eyes. Although I think that resins are equally beautiful, well... EDs faces/eyes are just like artistic paints and the porcelain are canvas...

This is one of Marinas resins, right? It is painted by Amoreen?? When I read the post I thought the doll was from another artist. I love mine painted by Marina but this one has so much detail and the eyes are to die for.

Aww, so sorry for misunderstanding! What was meant by "I made it" it was the fact that I finally was able to link the flickr picture that I struggled with this morning... I beg your pardon! ;-) This doll is obviously the resin Enchanted Doll by Marina, and she is beautifully painted by Karina Kolyagina.

I too think I would have to say this is the prettiest resin ED so far that I have seen - looking at the rest of her photo stream I would say those eyes are painted, she's been painting a LOT of Popovy dolls, and their eyes are similar sized to an ED (so: TINY!)

She had a Marina painted Asian ED, I doubt she would paint over that face and repaint the doll, she must have bought a blank ED from somewhere. This girl is the nicest Asian face I have seen and I do like mine a lot, I do see she has painted a couple Popovy Little Owls that are wonderful as well. Her painting is getting better all the time and it was wonderful from the beginning. She has made me some custom jewelry for my ED and it is so perfect and Delicate. To top this all off, Mia is so willing to do things quickly, listens to what you and want , and just plain nice. It is fairly easy to get blank Popovy dolls. I might just have her paint me one if she is willing. I have my two resin ED, and have given up getting any more ED. I would love a porcelain one but that won't be happening in my life time.

I went to Mia's Flickr and see this doll is a commission so not hers. Someone must have a blank doll and got her to do this. I know they will be very happy with this.

That is exactly what I was thinking Sculptress. This face up is as good as any I have seen. Even the eyebrows are wonderful. I hate doing eyebrows. I am betting you have done quite a few Faceups. Suok, your doll is gorgeous. And the wig is so nice. Did you make it or have it already waiting for you doll. My guess is you had it already because these wigs take quite awhile to do. Either that or you worked non stop on this doll.

Thank you everyone for your compliments. I really appreciate them.

I do love to paint face ups on my dolls. The REd was a bit challenging because of her small scale. I couldn't wait till night so i can peacefully paint her. I went to sleep around 2:00 in the morning, but i was happy that i finished her.

Gosh, did i have a hard time to put her tiny eyes in!!!!! And then to put that head of hers back on her neck!!! It was so hard to pull her ring through the opening and then it was practically impossible to turn the ring sideways, because there is not so much room for the fingers. I was terrified to brake something.

I don't normally take commissions, because i paint the dolls for my self, but would love to paint more REDs. LOVE to do body blushing. The Reds are so elegant, especially their hands.

I had this wig for a long time. I start preparing for my doll over 3 years ago.

I took the top of her head off to see how the eyes go in. It is a very small space. I think you need special tools to do this kind of fine work. Like some kind of long tweezers, maybe. The eyes are tiny. I have placed eyes in BJD'S before and it was not that hard, because they were quite a bit bigger. I was just curious. I will have painted eyes for my RED, so I will not have to worry about placing glass eyes. Maybe someone here on the Forum has some ideas, on how to place eyes.

For all the people who have done their own faceups, I have a question about freckles.

Is it best to do them first or last?

I really want freckles, but there seems to be a lot of variety to the way they are done. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Shashy
October 16th, 2015, 07:14 PM
That is a very good question about freckles. My girls do not have any freckles but I like the red haired ones that do. I am doing a custom Blythe right now (first Blythe custom for me) and I would not mind freckles but I would hate to ruin the Faceup. I have seen some real nice freckles but bad ones as well. There are different methods for doing them as well. Some use a tooth brush and flick the paint and others do them one freckle at a time with a toothpick or something like that. That is how I would do them, one at a time CAREFULLY.

allurose
October 16th, 2015, 07:51 PM
I think they are usually done last. I prefer the randomness of freckles (not feathers whoops!) flicked on, but it is possible to mess up and make splotches. Best to practice on a paper towel right before so you can predict the splatter pattern a little. At least for me, if I use the toothpick method and place one and a time they are too uniform and not realistic.

I have never heard of feathers. I will have to try that on a paper towel. I saw something on utube and they did them individual but then patted them down with paper towel so they spread a bit. It looked good. They used different colours too. If the face is finished you want this to look perfect and no do overs.

You seal the face up between layers- so then if there is a mistake, you can wipe the mistake off and not disrupt the other layers of paint.

I'm a little guilty for keeping my resin doll blank for so long (received in the first batch sent out over 2 years ago now) The new influx of dolls helped me get my act together, and Hibiscus was born.
I had initially planned to call her Orchid - she was meant to embody "Miss Orchid" the imaginary doll couturier I named my doll-clothes brand after... but, she had her own plans of being a Hibiscus flower... so, very well ;-)
The only part of her that is just a temporary fix are the stock eyes that came with the nude doll from Marina, I just find them so dark. I'll be getting her a pair of milky-lavender eyes when I can to complete the pastel appearance.

I love this unique look for a RED. I agree, the eyes are dark for her. Pastel color would be very nice, or something with a smaller iris so the white of the eye can be seen. Otherwise it looks almost like she has no eyes at all!!

Which technique did you use for her freckles?

Mayple, those eyes are 100% better than the others. My European has green eyes and my Asian has brown eyes but to tell you the truth they both look almost black to me. I think the iris is too big and the pupil too big so all I see is dark. It is something that really disappointed me when they arrived. I had really hoped that Marina would do the painted eyes at the time but of course we all know she wasn't for the Resin. I have really been thinking of getting a pair of painted eyes like Mai did for her Resin when she bought her and is now doing for her faceups or buying a different pair of glass eyes but you would not really know how they look until you put them in your doll and I don't want to waste my money on something that does not work. Also I am a little nervous about changing eyes for such a small doll. I think the painted eyes Mai does is the best but she is so busy right now with her jewellery and faceups that it would be a long wait. I would not even bother trying to do it myself. I have no idea how to paint such tiny eyes that would look half decent.

Allurose, that is so funny about the feather typo. I have been telling friends of mine from a small online doll group that are doing Blythe custom work (I have started as well as I am getting bored with my regular BJD) and no one had heard of using a feather. Then we thought we may give it a try. Well now I find out you didn't even do it. I can't wait to tell them there is no such thing. We have been discussing about doing freckles because I am not really a freckle person but on some dolls they look good if done properly. Some are awful. I find the Blythe that are customized look really cute with freckles. I hate to do a faceup and then make it look crappy with awful freckles. I know you should be able to wipe it off because it is sprayed but sometimes that does not work and the thought of starting from scratch scares me. With Blythe it wouldn't be so bad because the faceup is not very detailed , it is more about the carving, but on the RED it would be a more major thing. There is a lot more work in the faceup. Also on RED the face is so small. You would need a very delicate touch.

October 25th, 2015, 08:08 PM
Wow, I have started some amazing rumors I see! If anyone strikes it rich making freckles with feathers, well you all know where it started!!! ;)

Those eyes are really great! I agree, the smaller iris is key, otherwise they don't let in enough light to illuminate the pupil. I had to make some for our other small dolls because I couldn't find any I liked.

Shashy
October 25th, 2015, 08:32 PM
Allurose, if the feather thing works out I will name the technique after you!!! haha

So how did you make your eyes? Was it hard. I hate the idea of taking the eyes out like I said if it did not work. If I ever get brave enough I will show you guys the fake head I made to make my wigs on. It is embarrassing but the size works and that is all I really wanted. I spent very little time and effort on the face but I did put a nose and eyes. The head looks like a freak of nature. It did take quite a long time and effort to make it the right size. I wanted it exact and the shape as well because since Marina uses her blank heads to make a wig on they fit exact. I had to so some sanding after each wig I made and I am hoping the next one will be exact. If they are the slightest too big the wig moves a little. You can't tell but I know. Also it makes it complicated when my Asian and European have different sized heads. Not a lot different, but a little.

October 25th, 2015, 11:06 PM
I used this tutorial: https://thatvenitu.wordpress.com/2014/05/21/making-doll-eyes/

It wasn't too hard. I suggest making a dozen or so in slightly different eye and iris sizes since it is hard to predict what will look best. I like this type of eye for this size since the color is not deep in the eye behind glass. So the color is more vivid.

Aneemal thank you for posting this link. I will order some of these for sure. I didn't look at the site for long yet but I will definitely go back today and see how to order and look at the choices. I see they also have the size for Realpuki elf dolls. I have two and I would like some new eyes in them. So I looked at the eyes more and would 6 mm work. She has some made up already in 6 mm size. She has many eyes available for a custom order and it is kind of confusing. It doesn't explain about the smaller iris, etc.

Shashy

After measuring my dolls eye openings I realize 6mm will not work. It is 8mm we need. I checked her etsy site and she has tons in the 6 mm size and the 8 she does have are too big of irises or weird stuff like cats eyes. I was hoping to have instant gratification. Instead of waiting for an order to be made. Darn it, I guess I will just have to wait.

Actually, I think Mayple's ones may be 7mm! - My dolls eyes are between 7-8mm, so I got both sizes to test...I can't remember for sure though. Maybe both 7/8mm would work as the difference is minimal.

They are really inexpensive - less than $5 per pair. If you do order, Amanda has completed my previous orders within a month because she offers slots on a monthly basis. It would be worth ordering lots of pairs in one go. Maybe someone could organise a group order via the forum.

You're a champ Aneemal... a CHAMP.

Maybe I will order 7mm and 8mm since I see they are $5 each and less if you get a few. From the ones she shows on Etsy most seem to have the bigger irises so a special order seems to be what I will have to do. I am now hesitating a bit to change the eyes after looking in the head. That metal S hook is in the way without taking the head off. That head is on there pretty tight and I am nervous about breaking something. I remember someone else saying this. Maybe the eyes could be changed using needle nosed pliers but could be a challenge. Changing eyes in a big head is much easier.

Yes, we used two pairs of fine tweezers to put Almas' eyes in. It's not easy, but not so hard that I think people should be wary. The dolls and hardware are really incredibly sturdy. As long as you hold the doll securely (between your knees probably) so she can't fall, I think it is not risky. I always do that kind of thing over a pillow or sitting on my bed so if I do somehow slip and drop the doll, it's no big deal.

WELL. I've made some tentative attempts at unstringing this girl. Wow, this will not be easy. So far I have just removed the head and O ring, and now she is loose enough to look inside.

Discoveries:
-She does not have S hooks in hands and feet. Yikes.
-there is only one piece of elastic, cleverly looped around the body through arms and legs.
-all her joints are indeed sueded with hot glue, very smoothly and thinly applied.

The stringing pattern and lack of S hooks mean it will be impossible to unstring this doll without undoing the knot or cutting the elastic. I really don't want to cut it, since that means new elastic and I have none. But the knot and stringing is SO tight, I'm not sure I can undo it.

I am waffling over my plan now. I might just send her head to the faceup artist after all, and do the blushing/mani/pedi myself without unassembling the doll.

But on the other hand, this type of hot glue sueding will come off in a year or two and will need to be replaced. Elastic strung this tight will also need replacement eventually (I would guess 5 years tops). So it would be good to figure this out at some point...

I will talk it over with Joe when she wakes up. Quite a puzzle.

Like I said before DON'T TAKE HER APART!!!!! I am very good at blushing with a doll in one piece. Marina did very little blushing on these dolls so you really don't need her apart. I am happy you got her head off with no mishaps. It is on there tight. Doing a manicure and pedicure is easy with her put together. I repeat don't take her apart. I don't want to hear you crying from California all the way up here in Canada. My dolls are 2-1/2 years old now and still nice and tight. I had doubted the sueding but if it is hot glue then that is why I didn't notice it. They really hold a pose well. If you do have to take her apart in 5 years, then you could try then. I really wouldn't bother at this point. Enjoy her without all the stress. Those little fingers are so small I can just see them breaking off during your dismantling. When I pose my dolls I am so careful about those fingers. I never move the hands with the fingers. I do it at the wrist. I heard about porcelain fingers breaking so I am just so careful. This is just a warning. You can do what you want but I would just hate to see an accident when you have waited so long and paid so much money.

Shashy, I understand your reluctance. I am not so reckless as you think. I will not do anything to her that I cannot undo. I have blushed dolls without disassembling before, but the results are better if they are taken apart, the sealant can be applied more evenly.

I will be very careful regardless, of course. Like I said before, I am somewhat dissuaded by her stringing pattern. If I can't get the knot undone I will leave her be until she needs a tune up. But if I can undo it, I will carefully disassemble her without fear and make her some S hooks so it will never be so difficult again.

I wouldn't dare to take RED apart as well, but i know that Allurose is more familiar with doll's inside "anatomy" than i am. So, i would not even dream of looking inside. :)

I am puzzled though about the way they are strung with one elastic cord. Usually its one (short) for arms and another (longer) for body and legs. This i can picture and understand (just recently put one doll together), but one cord for all body, its interesting.

Maybe later, allurose, you can show us how it is working.

Souk, I never would have understood it myself if I had not seen it. Do you know how a 5 pointed star is drawn, without lifting the pencil? It is a little like that, with each limb and the head forming a point of the star. That is not the exact pattern of the string, but the closest I know how to describe with words.

Whether disassembled or not, I will still do a blushing tutorial, just because blushing is so useful and beautiful and I would not like anyone to be afraid to try it themselves. When I do that I will also make a diagram of her string. Good to have on the forum because eventually these dolls /will/ need to be restrung. Not even Marina's magic can keep the rubber in elastic from decaying!!

Yes, i just visualized the star (i do know how to draw it with one stroke), and i can see how they can be strung in such way, which is very unusual. Well it seems work a wonder, they pose beautifully.

I blushed them without taking them apart ( obviously ). It is not hard to do, but not the most comfortable way. So, your tutorial will be greatly appreciated. :)

It is not quite the same, like I said, but similar. The pattern is like this: head -> left foot -> left hand -> right hand -> right foot -> head. Maybe that makes sense.

I have decided for now to send only her head to the artist. I will give the problem some thought while the head is at spa and decide if it is worth taking her apart. In the meantime, she will sit here holding her O ring and looking quite silly. :)

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11/01/8072a23d48ff8510095aa272fe883c7b.jpg

Right now the knot that is usually in the head is resting around the part of elastic that goes left hand -> right hand. The body still poses very well, even with the elastic loosened.

Why don't you just blush her without taking her apart and if you are not happy with the result take the paint off and then unstring her. I really don't think it is worth it to take her apart. Then when her head comes back she is all done and ready to get dressed and played with. Of you could be like I am sometimes when I find something that I can't figure out and spend countless hours trying to figure it out and then wonder why I bothered. I can waste so much time on just little things that I must figure out or I lay awake at night thinking about it.

I might do as you say. But I won't blush her until the head comes back, I want to match the colors. :)

I never thought about that. You do want the colours to match. Have fun doing the manicure with those tiny fingers. They are so tiny and the feet even smaller. I have a Popovy doll and her manicure is meticulous. I don't know how such little fingers can be so perfect even when magnified. I hope you get you head back soon. Do you have a date?

Well allurose- I know you are brave, and definitely have the skill, but my knees go weak when I think of you unstringing her lol! I hope you get your head back soon- I can't wait to see her finished!

Her head has to go far away, but the artist will be able to do her right away I think. Still I would be surprised if she was back in a month. Surely by Christmas she will come back. I am trying to get all of her look arranged in the meantime. Wigs and clothing from far parts of the world, and some lovely jewelry of COURSE! :)

Now I need to go to Pinterest and review all photos posted there to decide what face to give my new RED when it arrives ;)

Hi, new to this thread because out of the blue my name has come up for a RED .. who'd guess many years later! So the dilemma is plucking up the courage to post the new arrival for a faceup somewhere. Being an artist I could give it a go but faces and fashion are not my thing so back to the posting dilemma.
